Frequency Matching

Frequency or CPM matching was hailed to be king, but frequency alone doesn’t really tell you anything except how fast the shaft is vibrating at that point of the shaft. That’s it.

The most common misconception was if you had a method of measuring the Frequency of a Shaft or a Club and a Chart to plot it on, you knew exactly what the Flex of the shaft of club was. Wrong!

In other words, there is a better, more accurate and more consistent way to measure the stiffness of the WHOLE shaft.

When a set of clubs are sold as being frequency matched where the matching is done by only taking a frequency reading at the butt of the shaft and cross referencing this against a linear progression does not ensure that the rest of the shaft, especially the tip section, is consistent between the clubs being matched.

Here is another point to consider when you think about sorting shafts by only their butt frequency as a way to make sure all the shafts in a set have the same stiffness. In the installation of wood shafts into a driver or fairway wood, almost all of that very area where the butt frequency measurement is performed for matching is cut off the shaft when the woods are built to conventional playing lengths.

Most shafts for woods are made with a raw uncut length of 45 inches or 46 inches. When installed in most driver heads, to achieve a playing length for the driver of 45 inches, in the area of three inches is cut from the butt end of the raw shaft after installation and considerably more at the driver lengths we recommend or for a fairway wood.
