Senior Golfers
Comfortably Fit Grips.
How many Senior golfers have been fit for their grip style and size? Maybe a couple, but not very many.
Choosing and fitting grips so they are as comfortable as possible with respect to the style/texture and the size can also help the Senior golfer gain more consistency in their swing as well as relieving stress and tension in the hands and arms.
There are now many more choices available and all of them can ease the strain on the hands and body.
Eliminating Hand Fatigue.
If you’ve ever experienced pain in your elbow, wrists, hands, or shoulders during or after a round of golf, you could be a candidate to use ProSoft inserts. Golfers with tendinitis, arthritis, fatigue from continued hitting or any other joint pain could gain from inserts. In the majority of cases, inserts are installed into irons including wedges and even putters – basically any club with a steel shaft.
They also can be used effectively in graphite shafts. Albeit, graphite shafts by their nature, already have some vibration dampening qualities inherent in their design. The benefits are more significant when installed in steel shafts, but you can still feel a noticeable difference when installed in graphite shafts as well.
Length of the driver and the woods.
Your driver should be fit for you at “the longest length you can control” with consistent on-centre strikes. During fittings, most golfers are more consistent, longer and straighter using a driver built in the 44.25”- 44.75” range and not the 45.5”- 46” standard length of most manufacturers.
From there, the length of each of your woods is determined from your fitted driver length with the “second-longest hitting wood” (notice I didn’t say 3-wood when referring to Senior golfers) fitted between 1” - 1.5” shorter than the driver.
Shorter, Lighter, Weaker and More Flexible.
There is a basic credo of fitting. "The longer the length, the heavier the total weight, the stronger the lofts and the stiffer the shaft, the harder the clubs will be to hit.” As discussed previously a shorter length can improve on-centre contact for a large majority of golfers, but add on a lighter total weight, more loft in the longer length clubs, and a more flexible shaft selection and you are playing a set that is going to help you, the Senior golfer, find that semblance of consistency.
Set Makeup.
Wow, what a huge help this area of fitting can be for the Senior player. If you have a full, "matched" set of clubs, very likely it will be the usual standard set of a driver, 3-wood, 5-wood and 3-iron to wedges.
Here's what you do: driver with a loft matched to your swing speed and angle of attack, no 3-wood, perhaps a 5-wood and a 7-wood will make a big difference for the Senior player trying to maintain a consistent golf swing.
Hybrids down through the 5 or 6-iron, conventional deep cavity backs through the wedges. Getting rid of the 3, 4, 5 and even 6-iron will create a set that will be considerably easier for you to hit a greater number of better-quality shots than any 3-PW set of irons.
MOI Matching of the Clubs.
It's interesting that each time something new and "high-tech" is introduced to fitting, there seems to be an automatic assumption that the technology is only for better players. MOl matching is for ALL golfers because it simply makes every club require the golfer to use the same exact force to swing. For a Senior golfer, what better way to help you than to offer you a set of clubs that all require the same effort to swing?
Find the ball to suit your game.
Once you have the right clubs for your game, you can start experimenting with different golf balls. You won’t want to use the same ball Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy would use, but your game will benefit from using a ball that you can compress – avoid high compression balls with a rating of 100 or higher. Senior golfers should look to use a low compression ball with a rating of between 70 and 80.
It’ll make a big difference to your distance!
